Moving From Fear To Vigilance When Dealing With Food Allergies

Let's talk about food allergy and fear. My first thought when my son was diagnosed with a peanut allergy was to create a peanut-free household. I wanted a peanut-free zone so that I don't have to worry about a possible anaphylactic reaction. That way I can let my guard down.

As I was reading about a food recall due to possible contamination with an allergen, it dawned on me that A.N.Y food could be contaminated at any time, including the "peanut-free" foods that I have at home. The safe bubble that I built gave me a false sense of security. And it made me realize that you do not want to let your guard down. It was a reminder that I have to be vigilant of signs of anaphylaxis at all times.

Here's the deal being vigilant is not the same as being fearful. Being vigilant means being prepared for the worse without feeling paralyzed. Being vigilant allows you to plan ahead for whatever life throws at you. Being vigilant allows you to be confident so that you C.A.N live your life as uninterrupted as possible because you will be prepared. My hope is that being vigilant can empower you to do stuff that we would otherwise take for granted (like eating out and going to birthday parties)

How do you balance life and food allergy?
